Planning Your Trip

There is so much to see and do in Cornwall that it is worth spending a little time planning your trip to make the most of your precious holiday time. To help you we have put together a list of some of the publications and information that you might find useful. Click on the links for more information.

Getting Here and Getting Around

The Transport Direct site is a new site and a very useful tool where planning your trip down to Cornwall or for days out while you are here. It gives you detailed travel instructions and great options for using public transport, is very clear and easy to use and is renowned for being very accurate.

Cycling Map

Sustrans is the co-ordinator of the hugely popular National Cycle Network and publishes the Cornish Way Cycle route map giving you an overview of the 180 mile long dedicated cycle route that winds its way through Cornwall. This map contains everything the local, casual or touring cyclist needs to explore Cornwall by bike. Close to Valleybrook, the National Cycle Network now incorporates St. Austell and the Eden Project and these new traffic-free routes through the former clay mines make for a wonderful journey to this now world famous visitor attraction. There is also the Camel Trail which follows a disused railway line from Bodmin through Wadebride and along the Camel Estuary to the popular town of Padstow.

South West Coastal Path

This guide to the South West Coastal Path is highly rated on Amazon and is described from Minehead to Poole. A synopsis of the book explains the tradition of walking the route anti-clockwise has arisen because in this direction there are more miles with the wind and weather behind you than against you. The guide divides the coast path into sections to help you forward plan both day walks and continuous long-distance hikes. Each section begins and ends where there are amenities for refreshment or accommodation (or access inland to them). Each section of the guide starts with a summary of its length, the kind of terrain and gradients to be expected, along with details of amenities and access points. An attempt has also been made to grade the walking for difficulty, although this will always be subjective.

Cornwall Today Magazine

Cornwall Today is highly topical and carries a wide range of features that all relate to the county today, such as fishing and Cornish events and is of interest to anyone wishing to holiday or live here. The regular content feature a lot of good articles encapsulating all areas of Cornish life, such as homes and gardens, wildlife, antiques, food and drink, village life, and what's on guides.

Cornwall Walks

Discover the highlights of Cornwall with the help of this useful slim-line pocket-sized walking guide. The guide offers over 50 walks from 3 to 8 miles long, including Prussia Cove, Land's End and Bude. The walks cover coastal, countryside and moor land to give a wide range of experiences across the county. It includes a lively introduction to the county, as well as detailed maps, carefully chosen start points, a guide for dog owners, parking advice, facilities, information panels and ratings for difficulty. With ideas for other things to do in the area, a guide to places to eat and drink as well as things to see, it is a very comprehensive guide.

OS Maps

Valleybrook is on OS Map 107, which covers St Austell and Liskeard. Maps can be bought from Amazon or directly from the Ordnance Survey Map Shop.
