Food
Cornwall has a well deserved reputation as a premier food destination and the standard of restaurants on offer is absolutely superb. From country inns to Michelin star restaurants the choice is phenomenal.
The unique geography and climate of the peninsula means that many fruits and vegetables grow here in the warmth of the gulf-stream, that won’t prosper elsewhere in the country – and now the county is even growing tea and producing its own wine!
Fine meats are produced with a growing trend back to slow growing methods and the use of traditional livestock breeds that farmers know thrive in the Cornish climate – and of course taste great! Try and find mutton or Old spot pork from Bodmin Moor, or Beef from the Lizard - you’ll be amazed how much better the food tastes in the West.
Exquisite farmhouse cheeses made from goats, ewes and cow’s milk cheeses are enjoying a renaissance in the Duchy, with everything from St Endellion Brie, Kernow Gold (pungent, creamy and un-pasteurised), to the well known Cornish Yarg.
There are hundreds of local food producers supplying an excellent range of local and national restaurants, or alternatively you can pick up your own organic produce from farm shops and weekly markets to cook back home in your villa or cottage.
Fish of course is the pride of Cornwall, with the main fleets at Newlyn and Padstow, but also smaller boats setting out from all the tiny harbours and inlets circling the coast. Shellfish and fresh wet fish are available throughout Cornwall and you’ll have the reassurance that the fish you buy or eat here was probably only caught yesterday, of if you’re lucky, very early that morning.
